Manuscript Submission
- Perception & Psychophysics publishes articles that deal with sensory processes, perception, attention, and psychophysics. There are four types of submission.
- Research Articles: These articles will typically describe several experiments unified by an introduction and a closing discussion placing the experiments in the context of other work in the field and providing coherent theoretical account of the new knowledge found in the results of those experiments. While the majority of published articles are reports of experimental investigations in these content areas, articles that are primarily theoretical or integrative can be submitted. There are no explicit length restrictions, but an acceptable article must make a substantial contribution to the field. Short theoretical notes and commentary can also be submitted under this heading.
- Brief Reports: This format is intended to facilitate the rapid publication of breaking news of general interest to the Perception & Psychophysics community. Brief reports are limited to 3,000 words of main body text plus figures. A cover letter to the editors should explain why this is appropriate as a Brief Report.
- Tutorial Reviews (invited): Tutorial Reviews are intended to serve as high-level introductory reviews of relatively broad topics in Perception & Psychophysics (e.g., “Perception of biological motion,” not “Review of the role of amygdala in perception of inverted biological motion in infants”). Length is “moderate” (i.e., shorter than Annual Review chapters, longer than Current Directions in Psych. Sci.). Bibliography should be extensive. Please note: Tutorial reviews are commissioned by invitation. However, self-nomination is welcome. Send a brief email to any editor describing the proposed review and providing bare outline.
- Research Highlights: Perception & Psychophysics publishes very brief (12 paragraph) accounts of current articles in the journal and elsewhere. These are news reports similar to the “Research Highlights” section of Nature. These are NOT submitted through the manuscript submission website. Typically, these are written by the editors and editorial board. However, if you think that the Perception & Psychophysics community should be made aware of an article (presumably, not one of your own), feel free to submit 23 brief paragraphs to any editor.
Submissions. Please note that new submissions are handled differently from resubmissions and revisions. Check the instructions below carefully. As of January 1, 2008, new submissions will be considered by Editor-Elect, Jeremy M. Wolfe. Resubmissions and revisions of papers originally submitted to Thomas H. Carr will be considered by him until December 31, 2008.
New Submissions: Authors can submit manuscripts for consideration by the Editor-Elect, Jeremy M. Wolfe, by visiting the online submission site mc.manuscriptcentral.com/pandp. The review process will be supervised by the Editor or one of the Associate Editors.
Resubmissions and Revisions: Authors need submit only an electronic copy, as an attachment and preferably in Microsoft Word, to pandp@msu.edu; those who must send a printed copy should address it to Editor Thomas H. Carr, Department of Psychology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1117. Manuscripts should be packaged with care to avoid damage or loss in the mail.
On the title page, include your address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Include an abstract of 100 to 150 words in the form used by the American Psychological Association. Manuscripts should adhere to the conventions concerning references, manuscript format, etc., described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.), except that in the abbreviation of physical units the style of the American Institute of Physics should be followed.
If convenient, please enclose an electronic copy of your manuscript on a disk (PC or Mac) with your original submission.
Final Accepted Version: The final accepted version of the manuscript must be submitted in accordance with the
Guidelines for Authors on the web.
Supplementary material: Authors of accepted papers are encouraged to deposit supplementary material (data sets, demonstrations) in the Psychonomic Society’s electronic archive www.psychonomic.org/archive.
Copyright and Permission: Authors must secure from both
the Psychonomic Society and the author of reproduced material written
permission to quote text of more than 500 words or to reproduce
two or more tables or figures from any article published in this
journal, except for the few that are in the public domain. The Psychonomic
Society normally grants permission contingent upon the author's
permission, a complete citation of source, and payment of a $10
fee per article from which material is taken. The fee only is waived
for authors who wish to use their own material commercially.
Permission from the Society is waived for authors who wish to reproduce
a single table or figure, provided the author's permission is obtained
and full credit is given to the Psychonomic Society and the author
through a complete citation. (If written permission is requested
for commercial use of a single table or figure, the $10 fee will
be assessed.) Permission and fees are waived for authors who wish
to reproduce their own material for personal use, and for others
to make single or multiple copies of single articles for personal,
noncommercial scholarly or for nonprofit, educational classroom
use. Extensive use of copy privileges in such a way as to substitute
