Why is Behavior Research Methods Going Online Only?

Partnership With HighWire Press

Psychonomic Society Publications no longer uses Ingenta for hosting of our electronic content. Readers are directed to www.psychonomic-journals.org, hosted by Stanford University’s HighWire Press, for electronic access to all six Psychonomic Society journals. The new platform provides significantly more user functionality, including multiple search options and browsing capabilities, linking tools, e-mail alerts, and RSS feeds. Tools of interest to librarians include:

  • Standard HighWire subscription management and administration tools
  • Full text in PDF format, with abstract and reference views
  • Online supplemental data archive
  • COUNTER 2-compliant reports
  • Pay-per-view options

Behavior Research Methods Goes Online Only

In February 2010, in its 42nd year of publication, Behavior Research Methods enters a new phase. With Issue 42(1), BRM will become an online journal only. Prices for 2010 have been posted. The journal will continue to maintain its high standard of quality; it will keep the same look and will continue to receive the same formatting and copy editing as before. Authors will be able to include color figures at no extra charge.

Why is Behavior Research Methods Going Online Only?

The primary motivation for this change is to economize on printing and mailing. We intend to reduce expenses without lowering journal quality (our editorial investment is unchanged). In addition, distributing BRM online-only will save libraries the expense of keeping hard copies on shelves, and it will even reduce our environmental impact. Our impression is that many readers of our journals prefer to access them online (sometimes even if they have personal subscriptions). Relative to our other journals, readers may be especially likely to access BRM online, because it publishes relatively brief, methodologically oriented articles.

The content of our all of the Psychonomic Society’s journals is posted online at www.psychonomic-journals.org and is available to all individual and institutional subscribers in advance of the print versions (and to nonsubscribers one year after publication). We expect also to use a repository service such as Portico or LOCKSS so that subscribers can be assured of permanent access to their past subscriptions, but we are still exploring our options in that regard.
