Alex de VootgAlex de Voogt is an Assistant Curator of African Ethnology, Division of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He initiated the yearly Board Game Studies conferences that have been in existence since 1995 and he is co-editor of the Journal of Board Game Studies. He is the author and editor of several volumes on the history and psychology of board games, including a catalogue of the British Museum, Mancala Board Games, a co-authored volume, Moves in Mind: The Psychology of Board Games (Psychology Press, 2004), and the book A Question of Excellence: a Century of African Masters (Africa World Press, 2005), which explores the practices of 20th century experts of board games on the African continent. In 2017 he co-authored a volume on board games found in ancient Egypt published by Bloomsbury Academic Press. His research interests span archaeology, anthropology, psychology, history, and linguistics but concentrate on traditions that crossed the borders of East Africa, the Middle East and the western Indian Ocean.
