House Considering First Minibus – Includes Funding for NIH and IES



On Wednesday, June 12, the House of Representatives began consideration of H.R. 2740, a bill to fund the National Institutes of Health and the Institute of Education Sciences, agencies important to behavioral and brain scientists. House deliberations are expected to continue into next week and to include a combination of delay tactics, grand standing, and shenanigans.







NIMH and NICHD Advisory Councils Meet, Discussing Their Respective Strategic Plans



NIH institute Advisory Councils advise the Secretary of Health and Human Services; the Director of National Institutes of Health; and the Directors of individual institutes, on all policies and activities relating to the conduct and support of relevant health research, research training, and other programs. Councils are comprised of topic experts approved by NIH leadership, who are often identified by the individual institutes.

OBSSR Honors Behavioral Scientists and NAS Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences Meets


The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research hosted its 12th Matilda White Riley Awards. The annual distinguished scholar lecture is named for a celebrated scientist and member of the National Academy of Sciences.


During the open session of the June meeting of The Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences (BBCSS), William T. Riley, NIH, and Marc M. Sebrechts, National Science Foundation, provided updates on their agency initiatives.

Reading and Math, Better Together


We get it: one of the best ways to help children succeed in school and in life is to read to them.


But math? Not so much, with some parents unaware of the importance of math in the early years and teachers by and large spending twice as much time on reading than on math, according to a new paper in Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences by David J. Purpura, who co-authored the paper along with Purdue University colleagues Ellen C. Litkowski and Valerie Knopik.
