Abstract
Can cognitive abilities such as working memory and reasoning be improved through behavioral interventions? After more than 20 years of cognitive training research, this question is still highly controversial. Typically, interventions targeting the enhancement of cognitive performance have led to large increases in performance in the trained tasks, but the evidence as to whether, and to what extent, these benefits may transfer to untrained stimuli and paradigms is mixed. In this talk, I will present findings from a series of studies investigating the underlying mechanisms of experience-based cognitive change through cognitive training interventions. I will argue that there is little evidence that cognitive training interventions increase the overall cognitive capacity available. However, instead, targeted interventions and cognitively stimulating activities may enhance the efficiency with which people use their existing capacity. I will conclude that identifying mechanisms and individual differences in cognitive efficiency may offer a promising avenue for developing effective interventions for better understanding and improving cognitive performance.
