Roger J. Kreuz

Roger J. Kreuz Roger Kreuz is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Memphis, where he currently serves as an Associate Dean and Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Arts and Sciences. Kreuz earned undergraduate degrees in Psychology and in Linguistics at the University of Toledo, and a master’s and Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology at Princeton University. After a one-year post-doc at Duke University, he joined the faculty at Memphis in 1988. His research interests include discourse processing and pragmatics, nonliteral language, and computer-mediated communication. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. Kreuz was inducted as a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society in 2014. He is also a charter member and Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science.

In addition to his academic contributions, Kreuz writes about language and communication for general audiences. He has published six books on topics such as second language learning, miscommunication, language and aging, and irony and sarcasm. His books have been translated into Korean, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. A seventh book, on the psychology of plagiarism, will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2026.
