Erin A. Maloney is an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa. She earned a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Waterloo (2011) under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Fugelsang. She then worked as a Post-Doctoral Scholar at the University of Chicago (2011-2015) under the supervision of Dr. Sian Beilock and Dr. Susan Levine, as a Senior Researcher at the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (2016-2017) and as a Defense Scientist for the Canadian Department of National Defense (2017), before starting at the University of Ottawa in 2017. The overarching goal of her program of research, which sits at the intersection of Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Education, is to understand the cognitive and emotional factors that underlie success in mathematics and science. By conducting studies in the laboratory, in school settings, and online, with adults and children, Dr. Maloney’s research program provides a greater understanding of how the mind processes numerical and spatial information and how this processing can be disrupted or enhanced by various emotional states. Her work has been funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). She is a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society, a member of the Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour, and Cognitive Science (CSBBCS) Executive Committee, the Governing Board of the Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society (MCLS), and the advisory board of Women in Cognitive Science – Canada (WiSC-C).
