Diversity & Inclusion Initiative: EMBRACE

Call for Proposals

EMBRACE

"Engaging Marginalized and Broader Representative
Audiences in Cognitive Exploration"

SUBMIT HERE

Initial Deadline for Proposals: March 1, 2026

The Psychonomic Society’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee is proud to announce the launch of a new initiative to provide up to $5,000 in funding for activities that expand participation and engagement among marginalized and underrepresented groups, with a specific focus on cognitive psychology. The new initiative, titled EMBRACE, stands for “Engaging Marginalized and Broader Representative Audiences in Cognitive Exploration.”

The EMBRACE Initiative supports the 2024-2030 Strategic Plan by calling for the promotion of practices that ensure the Society is diverse, inclusive, and welcoming to all members.

Eligibility

All members of the Psychonomic Society who are researchers (e.g., faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students) affiliated with a university or research institute are eligible to submit a proposal.

Proposal Criteria

  • Proposals must engage with underrepresented groups in cognitive psychology. Underrepresented groups could be defined by, but are not limited to, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability status, and geographic location, such as rural areas or internationally underrepresented areas. Proposals related to geographically underrepresented countries are particularly encouraged.

  • Proposals should outline activities that increase participation or retention among underrepresented populations.

  • Proposals should not exceed 1,500 words and must include a summary budget or outline of the activities and the estimated costs associated with each activity.

  • The Committee will prioritize proposals that allow for sustained activity beyond a single event.

  • Originality in proposals is a strength but not a requirement. This grant can be used to scale up an existing outreach program or start something new.

  • The Committee will consider a wide variety of initiatives. For example:

  • Proposals could engage students at any academic level, the general public, and/or groups nationally or internationally.

  • Proposals could engage an audience with the results of cognitive research or by getting them involved with research in a novel way.

  • Submissions should not be research proposals. Proposals should focus on engagement and outreach related to cognitive psychology.

  • Events must be completed within one year of being awarded.

Selection Process

The call for proposals opens on December 10, 2025, and will be reviewed by the 2026 D&I Committee, with only those proposals receiving a majority vote from the Committee being funded.

Timeline

Proposals will be reviewed beginning on March 1, 2026. Proposals received after March 1 will be considered on a rolling basis until the funds are depleted.

Outcome Reporting

Funded projects must provide an activity and outcome report within a year of being awarded and provide a short blog post about the event for the Psychonomic Society’s Featured Content blog.
