Special Issue
A great amount of research on human episodic memory, cognitive control, metacognition, social cognition, and cognitive aging has been inspired by the ideas of the late Larry Jacoby. Larry was highly esteemed for his brilliant theoretical insights, clever experimental approaches, and clear results. His insights and methodological innovations repeatedly catapulted the field of memory and cognition forward. He was also a powerful mentor with many students who have carried on his legacy. The goal of this special issue is to highlight the influence of Larry’s enduring contributions. From Larry’s perspective, everyday cognitive behaviors arise from a complex interplay of controlled and automatic memory processes. People can use controlled attention to retrieve specific past experiences and reflect on subjective states of consciousness. However, when recollection fails, people may rely on familiarity that can be attributed to incorrect sources, such as when a repeatedly encountered non-famous name is mistaken as famous. This dual-process perspective on memory and cognition has continually served as a foundation for understanding how habits and intentions interact across a wide variety of contexts and age groups. The issue will reflect the Psychonomic Society’s commitment to scientific merit, which entails the inclusion of scientists regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, disability status, country of origin, geographic location, and disciplinary expertise. Submission Guidelines/Deadline Submissions will be accepted until December 31, 2025. All submissions will undergo a standard, full peer review, maintaining the same high editorial standards for regular submissions to Memory & Cognition. Timeline Submissions open date: October 31, 2024 Submissions deadline: December 31, 2025 Author feedback deadline: April 30, 2026 Target publication date: September 2026 Questions?
