Howard Nusbaum

Howard C. Nusbaum is the Stella M. Rowley Professor of Psychology, and of the Committee on Computational Neuroscience and a member of the Grossman Institute for Neuroscience, Quantitative Biology, and Human Behavior.  He is currently the Director of the Chicago Center for Practical Wisdom and served as Director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience. From 2015 through 2017, he served as the Division Director for the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences in the SBE Directorate at the National Science Foundation. He received his BA from Brandeis University in Psychology and Computer Science and his PhD in Cognitive Psychology from SUNY/Buffalo in 1981.  His research has been funded by the NSF, the NIDCD, the NICHHD, the AFOSR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the John Templeton Foundation. He has served as Associate Editor for Brain and Language, for PLoS One, and as Consulting Editor for Developmental Psychology, and on the Editorial Board for Heliyon, and as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Speech Technology. He is a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society and the Association for Psychological Science, and a Faculty Fellow of the Hyde Park Institute, and has served on the Nominating Committee for the Psychonomic Society. He has edited five books on topics ranging from mechanisms of perception to psychophysiology to wise reasoning. He has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles on perception and perceptual learning, sleep consolidation, absolute pitch, neural mechanisms of speech perception, environmental neuroscience, neuroeconomics, hallucination, and wisdom.
