Lou Shomette is the Executive Director of the Psychonomic Society (PS), having joined in January 2014. Prior to joining PS, Mr. Shomette was the Chief Operating Officer of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), a medical society dedicated to increasing access and improving the quality of addiction treatment, educating physicians and the public, supporting research and prevention, and promoting the appropriate role of physicians in the care of patients with addiction. At ASAM, Mr. Shomette led a major restructuring of the financial, operational and personnel resources leading to ASAM’s first profitable year in over eight. Mr. Shomette has also served as the Senior Director for Membership and Operations for the Association for Psychological Science, whose mission is to promote, protect, and advance the interests of scientifically oriented psychology in research, application, teaching, and the improvement of human welfare. At APS, he was instrumental in increasing APS membership and reinvigorating their Annual Convention, as well as running their awards programs and student caucus. He has also held positions with the Food and Drug Law Institute and the Mathematical Association of America. Mr. Shomette’s experience spans all areas of association management including membership, publications, marketing, conventions, information systems, fundraising, HR, and governance.

A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Shomette lives in Ellicott City, Maryland with his wife and two daughters. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration with a marketing concentration from the University of Hartford, an IOM graduate certification in nonprofit management through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's Institute for Organization Management, as well as an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Shomette is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Association Executives and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives.
