Impact of COVID-19 on Scientific Societies, Research Questions

 

Concerns for the health of society members, residents of host cities, and the general public, have led many scientific societies to either cancel, postpone, or transition their annual meetings to virtual events. NSF has released a Dear Colleague letter inviting proposals related to COVID-19, and NIH has posted guidance on administrative issues related to the pandemic. Read more »

 

 

FABBS Advocates for Federal Funding for Behavioral and Brain Sciences

 

Appropriations subcommittees are busy collecting information and hearing from federal agency leadership, constituents, and the advocacy community, as they work to draft language for thefiscal year 2021 budgets under their jurisdictions. FABBS advocates for numerous federal budgets and programs investing the behavioral and brain sciences. To that end, FABBS belongs to over a dozen coalitions that come together in support of these agencies and programs. Read more»

 

 

NAS Symposium Speakers Highlight Value of Basic and Behavioral and Social Sciences

 

Last month, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) held a symposium to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the historic report ‘The Endless Frontier’ and mark the beginning of a year-long initiative to consider the next 75 years in science. In her welcoming remarks, Marcia McNutt, President of NAS, praised the report and identified opportunities for future growth including building a solid understanding of behavioral and social sciences as well as the humanities, a theme that would be heard throughout the day. FABBS Honors Paul Rozin

 

Paul Rozin has made a career of asking important questions that spark whole research literatures following from his work. As Rozin himself put it, “I open up fields rather than mine them.” His approach to research is informed by his orientation to understanding human psychology. As he notes, “I’m more interested in the process of knowing the nature of science and scholarship, rather than the facts: How do we advance? What does it mean to find something out? How do we get evidence? How do we make that evidence into a theory?”. Read more »

 

 

New Education Issue Available Now

The latest issue of Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences (Volume 7, Issue 1) is now available, co-edited by members of the American Educational Research Association. This issue focuses on education research, including themes of matter beyond cognitive skills, measurement and metrics, and training.
