Dear Colleagues -- We would like to take a moment to recognize that this is an intensely challenging time for everyone. Our societies, academic departments, and corporate affiliates are facing dramatic consequences of COVID-19, cancelling their annual meetings, teaching remotely and moving to virtual operations. We hope that all of our readers and members are staying healthy (and we wish those of you directly affected a quick recovery). We at FABBS will do our best to continue to serve as a resource to our societies and scientists during these uncertain and unsettling times.

Congress Makes Progress on Third Stimulus Bill, FABBS Submits Testimony to House Appropriations Subcommittees


Following days of negotiations, the Senate has passed the third COVID-19 stimulus bill –Coronavirus, Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (S. 3548) on March 25. Having resolved differences on the provisions for local government funds, aid to hospitals, food stamps, and assistance to the airlines, the package headed to the House, and was passedo n Friday. FABBS Comments on Modernization of Clinical Trials and OBSSR Invites Research on Gun Violence


In response to a request for comment, FABBS provided feedback on NIH plans regarding the modernization of FABBS identified concerns about consequences of the NIH expansion of the definition of clinical trials, particularly with regards to the challenges of registering Basic Experimental Studies involving Humans (BESH) on OBSSR has announced a new funding opportunity on firearm injury and mortality prevention research. Comics: A Valuable Interplay of Visual Art and Words


As a boy Neil Cohn loved comics, and he turned that love into an original and respected scientific domain influenced by linguistics and integrating drawing and language into a common understanding. “I study people’s minds and brains and how they understand visual information,” Cohn says from his home in the Netherlands. He studies how people process visual information, especially drawings used in comics and emoji, and he compares drawings and graphics with the ways people comprehend and read words and sentences. ICYMI: New Education Issue Available Now

The latest issue of Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences (Volume 7, Issue 1) is now available, co-edited by members of the American Education Research Association. This issue focuses on education research, including themes of beyond cognitive skills, measurement and metrics, and training.
