FABBS Sponsors NASEM Study and Offers Webinar Series on Data Standards; NIH Releases Final Policy for Data Management

FABBS is pleased to lend our support by sponsoring a consensus study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) onAccelerating Behavioral Science Through Ontology Development and Use. On October 29, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued theFinal Policy for Data Management and Sharing, requiring NIH-funded researchers to prospectively submit a plan outlining how scientific data will be managed and shared. Senate Releases Budget for FY2021, CR Expires on December 11

With the election behind us, a lame duck Congress will need to return to Washington to finish up the budget for fiscal year (FY) 2021 that started on October 1. The government has been operating under a continuing resolution that expires on December 11, 2020. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told reporters Wednesday that he wants a deal on the next coronavirus relief bill by the end of the year. Read more»

 

NSF Releases Two Dear Colleague Letters, Opportunities for FABBS Scientists

Earlier this month, the National Science Foundation (NSF) released two DCLs on: Strengthening American Infrastructure (SAI) and Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR). These are important opportunities for FABBS members since "NSF is particularly interested in proposals that integrate a deep understanding of human cognition, perception, information processing, decision making, social and cultural behavior" with regards to SAI and HDR is also specifically cross-disciplinary. Read more»

 

Driving Decisions Towards Truthfulness and Conscience

If someone knocked on your door and tried to sell you solar panels, how likely might you be to buy them? What if you learned the sales representative had those very same panels installed on his own house?

David Rand, associate professor of Management Science and Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, studies why people make choices, particularly those that benefit the greater good. Rand is a recipient of a 2020 Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences (FABBS) Early Career Impact Award. He was nominated by theSociety for Judgment and Decision Making. Science and Human Rights Coalition Highlights Responsibility of Science to Society

Converted into a virtual format, the 2020 Science, Technology and Human Rights Conference took place from Oct 22-23, hosted by the AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition, of which FABBS is an affiliate. This conference brought together human rights leaders, academic researchers, scientists, and engineers who work in private industry, government officials, members of impacted and vulnerable communities, and students in science, engineering, human rights, health, and law. Read more»
