Biden Assembles New PCAST, First Meeting

President Biden announced the new members of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). This independent Federal Advisory Committee is responsible for making recommendations to the President on Science and Technology policy, and providing evidence-backed insights to inform other policy areas. The White House has described this as the most diverse PCAST in history. Read more»

 

Congress Avoids Shutdown, but Uncertainty Remains

Congress passed a continuing resolution (CR) narrowly avoiding a government shutdown that would have gone into effect at midnight on September 30th. The legislation maintains current funding levels until December 3, by which time Congress will again have to find agreement on spending levels for fiscal year (FY) 2022. The bill also included emergency supplemental funding for disaster relief related to recent hurricanes, as well as for Afghan resettlement efforts.Read more »

 

House Committee Discusses Research Security

The House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology met to examineBalancing Open Science and Security in the U.S. Research Enterprise. Members of Congress expressed concern over increasing threats to sensitive information from foreign countries looking to gain an advantage in global research and development competition. Representatives on both sides of the aisle communicated their commitment to openness and international collaboration as essential elements of a successful federal research enterprise.Read more»

 

ARPA-H Listening Sessions Wrap-up

As previously reported, the Biden Administration has proposed the creation of a new Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) at the National Institutes of Health. Over the summer, the NIH and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) hosted 15 listening sessions to get feedback on the proposal. Read more »
