The National Science Foundation (NSF) Advisory Committee (AC) for the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate (SBE) met on December 2-3 for a packed agenda. In a presentation about the expansion of eligibility for the NSF Scholarships in STEM (S-STEM) program, SBE staff recognized FABBS' advocacy efforts to achieve this win for our disciplines. The most recent solicitation makes all fields supported by NSF eligible and includes social and behavioral science in the outreach. It was announced that AC member and FABBS board member Sandra Graham will serve as the SBE liaison to the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering.Read more»

 

NIMH and NICHD Conference Examines Youth Mental Health Disparities

In response to language from the Congressional House Committee on Appropriations calling for "a conference of leading extramural experts on health disparities…to discuss research opportunities and gaps, as well as evidence-based solutions and therapeutic interventions," the Office for Disparities Research and Workforce Diversity at the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development convened for a conference on December 8-9 entitled, “Identifying Opportunities and Priorities in Youth Mental Health Disparities Research.”

 

The Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences (BBCSS) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine met on December 9 and 10 for their Fall Advisory Meeting. BBCSS provides vision on how to advance public policy and practice by leveraging cutting-edge research from these fields. Each day, part of the agenda, featuring updates from federal colleagues and science presentation, was open to the public.Read more »

 

On December 14, after months of brinksmanship, Congress passed legislation raising the debt limit. Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell were able to negotiate a deal allowing Senate Democrats to pass the legislation with only 51 votes.

On December 3, President Biden signed a continuing resolution which maintains current funding levels through February 18, 2022.Read more »

 

FABBS met virtually on December 6 for our 2021 annual Council meeting, bringing together our board members, representatives from our 28 scientific society members, and three corporate affiliates to reflect on the past year and identify priorities going into 2022.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, 2021 was an exciting year for FABBS. The organization welcomed two new member societies and welcomed new staff.Read more »
