Budget Update

On February 18th, President Biden signed a short-term continuing resolution to provide government funding through March 11. This follows an agreement announced by House and Senate Appropriators on a framework for fiscal year 2022 government funding. Now that disagreements over top-line spending levels have been resolved, Congress will work to find agreement on the details. FABBS has been actively encouraging the strongest possible funding levels for science agencies for FY 2022. 

 

As of February 18th, social scientist Dr. Alondra Nelson is serving as the Acting Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and Dr. Francis Collins is joining on as President Biden’s Science Advisor. These senior leadership changes come in the wake of the resignation of Dr. Eric Lander, who left the White House following reports that he treated staff poorly and fostered a toxic work environment. Dr. Lander served as Director of OSTP and Science Advisor to the President, but those roles have been split between Drs. Nelson and Collins while they serve in an interim capacity.Read more »

 

Senators Jacky Rosen (D – NV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R – WV) launched the Women in STEM Caucus – the first of its kind in the Senate. The bipartisan caucus hosted its first meeting last week to discuss the challenges and opportunities for women in STEM. The Senators were joined by Dr. Aster Sigel, INBRE Lab, Nevada, and Dr. Rolanda Wilkerson, Principal Scientist and Senior Manager of Scientific Communications at Procter and Gamble. The meeting was moderated by the President for the Society of Women Engineers, Karen Horting. Read more »

 

Earlier this month, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy testified at ahearingfor the Senate Finance Committee to speak about mental health concerns for American youth. This bipartisan hearing underscores the Senate’s attention to the ongoing youth mental health crisis that has been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. The House and Senate have held numerous hearings on this critical topic. Read more »

 

The Health Subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce (E&C) held a public hearing “ARPA-H: The Next Frontier of Biomedical Research,” to discuss President Biden’s proposal for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).Read more »

 

On January 26th, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) held its open session meeting launching the Committee on Advancing Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in STEM organizations. The goal is to provide a hallmark consensus report of clear and actionable advice to the nation in advancing anti-racism and DEI. Read more »

 

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting, "Empower with Evidence," was conducted virtually on February 17-20, and featured an array of scientific topics, including public health, science communications, science policy, the behavioral sciences, linguistics, and more. TheJohn P. McGovern Award Lecture in the Behavioral Sciences, “Eyewitness Memory is Reliable, But the Criminal Justice System is Not,” was delivered by John Wixted, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at University of California, San Diego.
