Congress passed, and the President signed, omnibus appropriations legislation to fund the government in fiscal year 2022 (FY 22). This comes after months of negotiations and multiple continuing resolutions (CRs) that held off a government shutdown since September 30, when FY21 funding expired. The FY 23 Budget Request from the Administration is expected on March 28.Read more »

 

In passing FY 2022 government funding legislation, Congress took a step toward creating an Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). The initiative offers nimble funding mechanisms to support research efforts aimed at specific applications. President Biden pushed for the new agency as a way to more quickly and effectively “develop breakthroughs—to prevent, detect, and treat diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and cancer.”Read more »

 

On March 16th, National Science Foundation (NSF) Director Sethuraman Panchanathan announced the launch of a new research Directorate forTechnology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP), integrating new and existing programs focused on advancing emerging technologies, accelerating the transition from research to practice, and bolstering the STEM workforce. According to Panchanathan,who recently spoke at the FABBS annual meeting, "By pursuing new approaches that engage the nation's broad and diverse population in shaping research directions and outcomes, TIP will be a game-changer in terms of the pace of technological breakthroughs, future job growth and national competitiveness.”Read more »

 

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) held an important webinar, “Non-Animal Models in Biomedical Research: We Aren’t There Yet,” on March 16th. The scientists underscored the limitations, to date, of identifying effective alternative models to animal-model testing, explaining why animal testing remains essential to their research.Read more »

 

Food insecurity (the lack of access to sufficient foods for an active and healthy lifestyle) affects more than 10 million children in the US. This number has further increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among minoritized children.
