Outlook for Science in the 118th Congress

 

After a historic number of attempts (15!) and considerable drama, House Republicans elected Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to be Speaker of the House. In the process, Speaker McCarthy needed to make a long list of concessions in order to get the required votes. Accordingly, advocates are already bracing themselves for a full year continuing resolution. Read more »

 

 

 

Fiscal Year 23 Budget Includes Increases for Science

 

FABBS commends the House and Senate for coming together and passing the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. The overdue omnibus provides 10.3 percent increase in R&D funding over FY 2022 including for federal agencies supporting behavioral and brain sciences: Institute of Education Sciences (IES), National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).Read more »

 

 

On December 12, the White House launched the STEMM Opportunity Alliance, a consortium of almost 100 institutions that will work to address barriers and promote equitable participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM). The initiative will coordinate over $1 billion of promised public and private spending, focusing on five “equity and excellence” action areas. Read more »

 

 

In mid-December, the National Academies held the first meeting of a committee formed to assess the causes and extent of misinformation about science. Motivated by growing concern about the potential negative consequences of inaccuracies, the report will recommend ways to minimize the spread of science misinformation and limit its harms.Read more »

 

 

 

 

The Advisory Committee (AC) for the Social, Behavioral and Economic (SBE) Sciences Directorate at the National Science Foundation (NSF) met on December 15 and 16. The SBE AC meets twice yearly to provide advice, recommendations, and oversight to the Directorate concerning support for research, education, and human resources. Members represent a cross section of social, behavioral, and economic sciences and many different sub-disciplines within these fields, including industry. Read more »
