Richard PratherCritical Approaches to Human Cognition

Speaker: Richard Prather
University of Maryland, USA

October 23, 2024
11:15 AM - 1:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time

Abstract
In this talk I outline a Critical Approach to studying human cognition. This approach to cognition draws on methods and approaches across the social and behavioral sciences. The goal of this approach is to allow for a course correction for the study of human cognition away from a past that often explicitly or implicitly supported human hierarchy (e.g., white supremacy, misogyny). While explicit references to hierarchy have receded somewhat from mainstream work, some influence remains, particularly in the form of homogenous samples and assumptions about who is "normal." I address how we can deal with some of these issues while advancing our understanding of human cognition.
