 FY 21 Budget and Future Funding for COVID
Last Friday, House Appropriations Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY) shared preliminary subcommittee spending allocations, referred to as 302(b)s, giving subcommittees the green light to move forward with their budgets. Over on the Senate side, the FY 2021 appropriations path forward is less clear. Advancing appropriations bills would require 60 votes and the GOP control falls short with 53 seats. Read more»

 NSF Receives Funding in Stimulus
NSF received $75 million in the most recent stimulus package, the CARES Act, to help “prevent, prepare for, and respond” to the pandemic. In addition to base support, NSF has a mechanism, Rapid Response Research (RAPID), to fast-track time-sensitive ideas and enables the agency to help fight the pandemic by supporting scientists doing relevant work across disciplines and has already funded 70 projects. Looking at the average award size last year of $89,000 the stimulus will fund about 840 studies relating to COVID-19. FABBS President, Roxane Cohen Silver, University of California, Irvine received one of the awards to study of how the COVID-19 pandemic affects the well-being of Americans. Read more »

FABBS Comments on Proposed NIH-wide Strategic Plan
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is working on a proposed framework for the NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2021-2025. (See RFI.)

 The Added Value of Latinx and Black Teachers
As Congress debates the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, a new paper in Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences urges lawmakers to focus on provisions aimed at increasing the numbers of Black and Latinx teachers. Reviewing decades of literature, authors Travis J. Bristol and Javier Martin-Fernandezr eport that Black and Latinx students benefit socially, emotionally and academically from having teachers who are the same race as they are.
