While Awaiting President’s Budget Request, Congress Advances COVID Relief 

The Biden administration has yet to share an official timeline for sending the president’s first budget request to Congress. There is some speculation that the administration will release a “skinny budget” – a broad-brush preview – in mid-March to be followed by a full presidential budget request in mid-May. In the meantime, Congress has been working on COVID-19 relief spending of roughly $1.9 trillion, with several committees advancing legislative proposals for inclusion in the final bill. Additionally, congressional earmarks may return in the FY22 appropriations process. Read more »

 

February Proves a Busy Month for NIH Advisory Councils 

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Advisory Council, The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Advisory Council, and The National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse (NIDA) all met in February. Read more »

 

NSF Releases Merit Review Digest and SED, FABBS Submits Comments on Strategic Plan

Each year the National Science Foundation (NSF) prepares an analysis of the merit review process for the National Science Board (NSB). NSF has also released the 2019 Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) data, which monitors the number of degrees awarded, along with fields of study, paths to the doctorate, postgraduation trends, and demographic information. Additionally, FABBS submitted comments on the NSF strategic plan, underscoring the importance of the NSF mission to invest in fundamental science. Read more »

 

FABBS Supports Efforts to Advance Open Science

As the federal government and scientific societies work to increase the openness of science, FABBS is supporting a NASEM study on behavioral ontology, providing information on federal requirements and successful examples of sharing, and informing federal policies and practices. Read more »

 

Work on the ‘Nation’s Report Card’ Continues with Focus on COVID-19

Earlier this month, the Department of Education announced a large scale survey, the “NAEP 2021 School Survey”, to gather vital data on the impact of COVID-19 on students and the status of in-person learning. Read more »
