Bills to Advance Science Pass House

On May 17, the House of Representatives passed five bills endorsed by FABBS. These bipartisan bills sponsored by Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Ranking Member Frank Lucas (R-OK) of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, now head to the Senate for further consideration. Read more »

 

NSB Meeting Focuses on Broadening Participation

The National Science Board (NSB) met on May 19-20 and heard from National Science Foundation (NSF) leadership about the status and future direction of the foundation. NSF Director Panchanathan discussed how his priorities align with the NSB’s Vision 2030, with White House priorities, and with funding proposals under consideration in Congress.Read more »

 

WMPD Day - FABBS a Cosponsor

The release of the 2021 biennial report, "Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities (WMPD) in Science and Engineering," inspired a day of online events dedicated to recognizing the progress that has been made and understanding the gaps that remain in the state of diversity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).Read more »

NIH Council Meetings

Council of Councils

The Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) convened on May 20-21 for informative and varied presentations. Dr. William Riley, Director of Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research (OBSSR), delivered the report, "Trans-NIH Research Opportunities in the Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences," on behalf of the Working Group on Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (bBSSR).Read more»

 

BRAIN Initiative

During the National Institutes of Health (NIH) BRAIN Initiative Multi-Council Working Group meeting on May 20, it was reported that the largest share of BRAIN-funded researchers are engineers and 18.3 percent of researchers are psychologists or behavioral scientists. Working Group members raised concerns that the focus on engineering may be handicapping inclusion efforts.Read more »

 

NIMH

The National Advisory Mental Health Council convened on May 18 for an open policy session to advise the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) on strategic planning and grants-making processes and other policy issues related to mental health research conducted and supported by the NIMH.Read more»
