House of Representatives Passes Research Funding Bills for FY 22

On July 29, the House of Representatives passed a seven-bill appropriations package which includes key agencies supporting behavioral science: the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). The Commerce, Justice, Science appropriations bill, which includes funding for the National Science Foundation, was held up due to intra-party disagreements largely relating to police expenditures. Read more»

 

New NIH-Wide Strategic Plan: Increased Emphasis for the Brain and Behavioral Sciences

Every 5 years, the NIH updates their NIH-Wide Strategic Plan to establish a framework of key objectives. The NIH released their most recent report in July after soliciting public input. FABBS submitted comments last April to commend the inclusion of the behavioral sciences within NIH priorities and provided recommendations to support advancements in the sciences of the mind, brain, and behavior. Read more»

 

FABBS Invited to Provide Feedback on ARPA-H

The NIH and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) have organized a series of open and invite-only listening sessions to get feedback on the new Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). FABBS has been invited to participate in a STEM Community listening session on August 12 and also to present on behalf of the Friends of NIMH, a coalition which FABBS co-chairs, at the August 16 session with the National Institute of Mental Health and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. NSB Discusses Diversity in STEM at August Meeting

The National Science Board (NSB) convened virtually on August 3-4 for its quarterly meeting overseeing the National Science Foundation (NSF). The open sessions of the meeting featured updates from NSF staff and discussions about the Vision 2030 initiative and tools for broadening participation in science and engineering. Read more »

Congratulations to Dr. Gregory Trevors on receiving the2021 FABBS Early Career Impact Award, as nominated byThe Society for Text and Discourse. His research focuses on ways to correct misconceptions about socio-scientific issues, including vaccines, genetically modified food, and climate change, among others.
