On March 1st, President Biden delivered his annual State of the Union address and called on Congress to take action on his research priorities, including NSF reauthorization and the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health.Read more »

 

Last month, Members of Congress sent letters to federal colleagues on issues of importance to members of FABBS societies. Two Senators sent a letter to Dr. Alondra Nelson, Acting Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, encouraging the agency to update the existing government-wide public access policy for federally funded research. Meanwhile, eight Representatives sent a letter to Acting Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Lawrence Tabak, opposing the use of animal models. Read more »

 

The Department of Justice recently announced updates to federal policies regarding academic research security, addressing concerns that previous policies "fueled a narrative of intolerance and bias" and potentially stifled international research collaboration. Going forward, cases involving academic integrity and research security will be supervised by the Department’s National Security Division to provide an added layer of oversight.Read more »

 

On February 23rd and 24th, the National Science Board (NSB) held their quarterly oversight meeting. The meeting included updates on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts at the foundation, interagency collaboration with the department of defense, and a recent report on the state of science and engineering higher education in the US.Read more »

 

On March 1, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine's (NASEM) Committee on Future Directions for Applying Behavioral Economics (BE) to Policy held its first meeting to review evidence on the applications of insights from BE, public policy objectives, and past controversies from the field.Read more »

 

The newest edition ofPIBBSexamines multiple facets of infant and child developmental outcomes and the variety of factors affecting them, such as sleep, cultural diversity, parental stress, media usage, racial biases, mental and behavioral health services, and more.PIBBSprovides research from brain and behavioral scientists and other experts in the fields that can help build sound policies to address the societal challenges affecting children and youth.Read more »
