On March 28, the President released his fiscal year (FY) 2023 budget request with mixed news for agencies supporting behavioral and brain science. The FY23 recommendations were largely based on FY21 enacted funding levels, and it is unclear how this will affect legislators' understanding of the request. FABBS will continue to engage with the Administration and Congress to support our disciplines in the FY23 budget.Read more »

 

Last week, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) kicked off a series of discussions on “translating research evidence to practice and policy” with the Summit on Evidence for Action. Participants from federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and higher education institutions gathered to share best practices for generating and using the results of research, promoting consistent evidence-based decision-making, and increasing collaboration among researchers and policymakers. Read more »

 

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) met on March 24 to hear from experts on science communication. Dr. Collins spoke of the importance of science communication across the federal government, mentioning that several working groups have highlighted the importance of improving science communication including how to best talk about the evolution of science and allowing room for uncertainty. The panel featured dynamic experts from the behavioral and social sciences, including two speakers–Arthur “Skip” Lupia and Kathleen Hall Jamieson–who have previously presented at FABBS annual meetings.  Read more »

 

On March 31, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released recommendations for the Future of Education Research at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). NASEM convened an expert committee, at the request of IES, to assess and inform practices at the National Center for Education Research and the National Center for Special Education Research. Notably, the report includes a focus on equity across recommendations and throughout the Institute’s programs and initiatives.Read more »

 

NASEM held its second meeting for the Committee on Advancing Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) in STEM on March 22. The goal of the interdisciplinary committee is to provide a hallmark consensus report of clear and actionable advice to the nation in advancing anti-racism and DEI within all levels of STEM organizations. Read more »
