Honoring NIH Champion, Rep. John Porter (R-IL)

FABBS mourns the passing of Representative John Porter (R-IL), whose dedicated, bipartisan efforts to advance medical research were instrumental in growing the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH budget doubled during the 1990s, thanks in no small part to Rep. Porter's work. After retiring from Congress, Rep. Porter joined the board of Research!America, where he continued to play a key role in building support for federal research funding. In 2000, the John Edward Porter Neuroscience Research Center at NIH was established in his name.

NIMH Council Discusses Mental Health Priorities, Progress on Strategic Plan, and Portfolio Composition 

On June 7th, Dr. Joshua Gordon welcomed a full panel of members to the 267th National Advisory Mental Health Council Meeting. Dr. Gordon presented his Director's Report, providing updates on the White House’s unity agenda and strategy for addressing the national mental health crisis, the NIMH research portfolio, mental health at ARPA-H, and investments in new research and innovative treatments.Read more »

NIH OBSSR Matilda White Riley Honors Behavioral Scientists

The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) hosted the annual awards event in commemoration of Dr. Riley's legacy inadvancing behavioral and social science research. The distinguished lecturer for this year, Dr. David R. Williams, presented on how racism and marginalization strain health outcomes, as socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic status are inextricably linked to wellbeing. Dr. Williams also highlighted research on promising interventions to reduce these disparities. Five early-stage investigator (ESI) honorees presented their findings on recently published behavioral and social science research.Read more »

FABBS Welcomes New Interns

FABBS welcomes two summer interns from departments in the psychological and brain sciences at our university affiliates: Danya Kariv from Boston University and Paige Wilson from East Tennessee State University. Congratulations to Dr. Alvin Thomas on receiving the 2022 Early Career Impact Award, as nominated by the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI). Dr. Thomas is a clinical psychologist and currently an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Upon recognizing the social and developmental challenges that prevented disadvantaged children from being able to fully engage in school, Dr. Thomas focused his research in identifying and addressing these unique issues head-on.Read more »
