Dr. Arati Prabhakar, the newly confirmed Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, shared the aims of U.S. science and technology in her talk, ‘Achieving America’s Aspirations.’ Dr. Prabhakar identified “three shifts” needed to advance the benefits of science and technology and called out the importance of the behavioral and social sciences to achieve these ambitious goals. SEAN Holds Fall Symposium

 

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) convened behavioral and social scientists, state and local decision makers, and non-profit organizations that support them to reflect on the effectiveness of the Society Experts Action Network and look ahead for new opportunities. SEAN, with support from the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate at the National Science Foundation, was stood up early in the COVID pandemic.Read more »

 

 

 

Endless Frontiers Symposium Charts Ambitious Path for Science

 

NASEM also hosted the “Endless Frontier Symposium 2022: Research and Higher Education Institutions for the Next 75 Years," bringing together a diverse group of experts to discuss how leading research institutions must optimize their work to meet future complex challenges.Read more »

 

 

The Administration released a national security memorandum intended to prepare the U.S. to detect, respond to, and mitigate the consequences of the next large-scale viral or biological threat. The memo directs agencies to prioritize biodefense and pandemic preparedness and provide further research and development of tools that would help expand the country’s early warning systems. FABBS joined sister scientific societies, AAAS, AERA, COPAFS, and COSSA, on community comments urging the development of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) indicators in response to the OSTP RFI on the Federal Evidence Agenda on LGBTQI+ Equity. The effort was led by Dr. Jon Freeman, Columbia University, an active FABBS member.

Congratulations to Dr. Brendan Johns, assistant professor at McGill University, on receiving the FABBS Early Career Impact Award, as nominated by the Society for Computation in Psychology (SCiP). Dr. Johns is pioneering new ways to use large-scale computational modeling to study past experiences related to cognitive processes in language to predict future behavior. His research is focused on uncovering language patterns to understand the role of context in two areas: lexical semantics, the study of word meaning, and lexical organization, how language is organized in the mind. SBM Joins FABBS

 

FABBS is delighted to welcome theSociety of Behavioral Medicine into the FABBS family. SBM is a nonprofit organization composed of researchers, clinicians, educators, industry professionals, and policymakers from more than 20 healthcare disciplines. They focus on behavioral, psychosocial, environmental, and biomedical theory, knowledge, and interventions relevant to health and disease.
